ICANN Training Series – Nordic Region: What is Universal Acceptance and Why is it Important?

The Domain Name System (DNS) has changed dramatically over the last decade in regard to the overall number of top-level domains (TLDs), their character length and the scripts and languages used for them. There are now more than 1,200 active generic TLDs (gTLDs), as well as more than 60 country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) that are available in different scripts. These new TLDs provide greater consumer choice and can represent cultures, brands, geographies, special interests, and more (e.g. .ไทย, .LONDON, .PIZZA, .PHOTOGRAPHY). Universal Acceptance (UA) supports a multilingual Internet by ensuring all domain names and email addresses – in any language, script or character length – are accepted equally by all Internet-enabled applications, devices, and systems. With more than 5 billion internet users, Universal Acceptance is key to ensuring every person has the ability to navigate and communicate on the Internet using their chosen domain name and email address that best aligns with their interests, business, culture, language, and script. The session provides a technical introduction to UA and what the technical community needs to do to support it.
