.ZA domains registration, administrator and relevant information

Due to the 2nd level domain structure of .za, the Authority currently administers the .za zone file only. Second level domain administrators administer zone files for their specific domains.

Active domains accepting new registrations

Information about .za domains that are accepting registrations can be found here. Each domain currently has its own policies, procedures and requirements. Some do not charge registration fees while others do. Most of the active domains are restricted (i.e. they serve specific communities and applicants are required to meet eligibility criteria), while the rest are unrestricted or private.

Active domains not accepting new registrations

Information about these domains can be found here. These domains only administer already registered names but do not accept new registrations.

Deleted domains

In February 2006, the Authority published a public notice indicating its intention to delete a number of inactive domains. The notice called for any objections to the deletions to be submitted in writing. After no objections were received, another public notice was published listing the domains removed from the .za zone file and that will ultimately be deleted by 7 August 2009 in the absence of late objections.

New domains

Since its assumption of the management responsibility of the .za namespace, the Authority put a moratorium on new domains. This moratorium does not necessarily prohibit new domain applications, but suspends consideration of new domain applications until the Authority has done sufficient work of bringing .za domains to a certain level of service standards.

The policy and procedure for new domain applications is part of the Authority’s Memorandum and Articles of Association.
